In the summer of 2008 there was a chicken crossing the road in West Philly. Andrew Olson, a horticulturist by trade and backyard gardener by hobby, decided that this weary pint sized traveler needed a rest. Scooping her up he took her to his apartment located at 51st and Chester streets. Little did he know that with this small action his future was being written…
Welcome to Farm51. What began with a little Rhode Island Red has now become a small scale educational urban farm and market located in Southwest Philly. Our mission is to provide neighbors and friends with fresh, affordable produce. In short, we feed people! Part production site, part neighborhood hangout, Farm51 is a homey blend of animal, people, and plants.
We are supported by the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society (PHS) which has allowed us to transform our vacant lots into lush edible spaces.
How is dear Annie?
I love it!
We raised chickens on the farm when I was a girl. I think that’s why I made a quilt with chicken blocks. I think I liked the birds.
I humblely submit a bit of information to you. We are located in Southwest Philly. I understand the mixup. We are always being confused with West Philly, but alas it just ain’t so. Yo Southwest Philly forever!!!!!
